Polona Podnar graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana.
She joined the UKC Ljubljana, where she specialised in gynaecology and obstetrics at the Gynaecology Clinic, and gained experience working and on-call at the Postojna Hospital and the Jesenice General Hospital.
After her specialist examination in 2008, she continued her work at the Clinical Department of Perinatology of the Gynaecology Clinic in Ljubljana.  

In 2014, she founded a private gynaecological clinic – Podnar Medical Centre, where she focuses on women’s health at all stages of life.
The main areas of work are pregnancy management and prenatal diagnostics, treatment of urinary incontinence, hormone treatment in peri-/menopause and treatment of osteoporosis.
